SILS - Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery
Since the evolution of Laparoscopic surgery, it has been an endeavour worldwide to further minimize surgical trauma leading to, not only cosmetically more aesthetic scars, but also to much quicker recovery of the patient and shorter return to work times.
Technological advances and refinement of laparoscopic instrumentation has led to a generation of more refined, versatile and smaller instruments becoming available. The field of laparoscopic surgery now offers therapeutic intervention in most intra-abdominal conditions. The logical step ahead was the evolution of SILS – Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery, with its promise to further minimize access trauma, provide a superior cosmetic result, allow quicker recovery and at the same time not compromise on surgical principles.
SILS is also known as Single port access (SPA) surgery, also known as laparo endoscopic single-site surgery (LESS).
Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery refers to the Laparoscopic surgery through a single incision, gained popularity in the last 1 – 2 years and is currently offered at major laparoscopic centres worldwide. SILS has been used to perform a wide range of procedures ranging from Cholecystectomies, Appendicectomies, Hernia operations to solid organ surgeries like Nephrectomy. It has also been utilized to perform Hysterectomies and Bariatric procedures like Gastric Banding and Sleeve Gastrectomy.
The Single Port SPA technique has been used to perform various surgeries like cholecystectomy , nephrectomy, appendectomy hysterectomy, oophorectomy, adrenalectomy, gastric bypass, hernia repair, splenectomy, colon resection liver resection and more.
Since the entire surgery is performed through the navel, it does not leave any visible scar like a traditional multiport laparoscopic approach.
