What is Mini Gastric Bypass / One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass?

Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery / One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass is being performed in Jammu Hospital Jalandhar since 2007. The first certified Centre of Excellence for bariatric and metabolic surgery by Obesity Surgery Society of India (OSSI) in Punjab.

MGB/OAGB is a combination of restriction and malabsorption. In this surgery, we remove both the major reasons for obesity which are, overeating & over absorption (means people who are eating less but still gaining weight due to the inherent increased absorption of food probably due to genetic or unknown reasons).

The first part of the surgery is restricting your food intake according to your body requirements, height & age by reducing the size of your stomach so that the calorie intake is enough for maintaining your needs and at the same time cutting down your extra calorie intake.

The second part of the surgery consists of decreasing or optimizing food absorption. It is done by bypassing the duodenum and some part of jejunum so that the over absorption of food is down-regulated to optimized absorption.

The bypassed stomach, duodenum, and proximal jejunum are lying inside the body with their complete blood supply. Though they are not the parts of the food intake system now their juices and secretions help in the digestion of food in the common channel (the part of intestine beyond the bypassed segment).

Thus, restricting the food intake and restricting the absorption will help in calorie loss and resulting in excess weight loss.

The best part of Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery / One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass [MGB/OAGB] is that it is a reversible procedure, which can be done if medically required. And also the bypass length can be tailored in MGB/OAGB which is not possible in other procedures.

Comparative studies of MGB/OAGB with other procedures like lap band, sleeve gastrectomy, roux-en-y gastric bypass has shown superior results of MGB in terms of weight loss, remission of comorbidities like type-II diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, snoring and hypertension, etc.

At the same time, MGB/OAGB warrants us to take a dose of multivitamin/calcium/iron regularly, so as to avoid their deficiencies. A high protein diet is also mandatory.

Why do we prefer Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery over other procedures

What Is Bariatric Surgery Cost In Punjab India? Bariatric Surgery price in Punjab India ranges from 2.5 lacs to 5 lacs. How is Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery done? This procedure is done laparoscopically, making small five one cm holes on the abdomen. A long, narrow gastric pouch is made along the lesser curvature of the stomach. A wide gastrojejunostomy is made at about 2m from the starting point of the small intestine. It re-routes the food from gastric pouch to the distal part of the small intestine, while bypassing the residual stomach and proximal part of the small intestine, leading to less intake of food and less absorption of food. This causes low-calorie absorption and hence gradual and sustained weight loss. The whole procedure takes about 20-30 minutes. How long is the hospital stay for Mini Gastric Bypass? The patient stays in the hospital for 24-48 hours after the surgery. Patients start taking liquid diet shortly after the surgery, sometimes as early as a few minutes, depending upon the level of consciousness and clearance from the recovery room doctors. When does a patient start walking after Mini Gastric Bypass surgery? Usually within a few hours of surgery patients are mobilized. What is diet after Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery? Patients start taking liquid diet on the day of surgery and switch to soft and solid diets within days of surgery. Non-Vegetarian patients can have high proteins from egg, fish, and chicken, whereas vegetarian patients can have high proteins from tofu cheese, soya milk, cereals, and soybean, etc. A Mediterranean diet like salads, Eating primarily plant-based foods, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Replacing butter with healthy fats, such as olive oil. Using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods. What diet should be avoided after Mini Gastric Bypass? Diet high in carbohydrates, sugar, and fats should be avoided for eg. Fizzy drinks, fried food, etc. What supplements one has to take after Mini Gastric Bypass? You need to take Vitamins (B12, Folic Acid, B6, Biotin, etc.), Calcium in citrate form. Iron is required for menstruating females.
